WORK OUT HOW MANY DAYS YOU HAVE - Once you have worked out how many nights away you can spend, the fun part begins.
WHERE DO YOU WANT TO TRAVEL - Now that you know how nights away you have, you need to work out how far you can travel comfortably in that time frame. You don't want to spend all your time driving and not allow stops along the way. Look at your end destination and work out the route you'll be taking then you can do further investigation into the places along the way that you want to visit.
GOOGLE MAP IT - I always find Google Maps is great for working out the distances between towns to give you a rough idea of how long you'll be travelling each day. You can search specific towns that you'll be driving through to see if there's anything of interest that might be worth stopping for. JUST REMEMBER: towing a caravan makes it a slower journey so allow that extra time to arrive safely.
WHAT TIME OF YEAR TO TRAVEL - As this beautiful country of ours is so vast, you will want to take into account the time of year that you travel. If you're heading up north into the tropical areas the best time to travel is from around the start of May until the end of October to avoid the wet season but expect it to be crowded. If you are travelling in peak season it is best to book ahead as you might find yourself sleeping on the side of the road or having to drive further than planned to find accommodation. This is not ideal if you're travelling with kids.
MAP IT OUT - It's always good to map out your trip so start a spreadsheet or go old school and use paper and pen to see how your trip is going to work with your dates.
